The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is committed to employing best practice in the protection of privacy and confidentiality on this website and in the virtual world of Second Life.

Anonymous information is collected through the monitoring of server log files, such as the number of visitors to the website in a given period, but it is purely statistical and cannot be used to identify an individual user. We use IP addresses from log files to analyse trends and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.

Registering and accessing Second Life

Visitors registering here for access to Second Life are required by Linden Lab to provide a valid email address and their date of birth. This information is collected directly by Linden Lab and is subject to their terms of service and privacy policy. NPL does not receive or use this information.

Visiting the Second Health Estate in Second Life

When you visit the Second Health Estate in Second Life NPL collects and stores information about your visit, under the name that you chose when you logged in to Second Life.

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

If you do nothing during your visit but walk around the area, we will gather and store certain information about your visit automatically. We automatically collect and store information like the following concerning your visit.

     * Your avatar name;
     * Your location;
     * Your status (active, busy, etc.);
     * Your IP Address;
     * Public information about your account;
     * The date and time you access our area;

We use this information to help us make our virtual space more useful to visitors—to learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use.

Information That You Voluntarily Provide

If you provide us with personally identifiable information, for example by sending an e-mail or by filling out a survey, we use that information only to respond to your message and to help us provide you with the information and services that you request.

Submitting voluntary information constitutes your consent to the use of the information for the stated purpose. When a user submits information via an object or through chat anywhere in our virtual land they are indicating voluntary consent to use of the information they submit for the stated purpose.

How Information is Used

The information we collect is used for a variety of purposes (e.g., comments, to respond to requests for information). We make every effort to disclose clearly how information is used at the point where it is collected so that our users can determine for themselves whether they wish to provide the information. Further, the information we collect helps us improve the experience you have on our virtual land.

Sharing of Information

We may share the information you give us with Imperial College for research purposes only, but it will never be published except in aggregate form where individuals are not identified. In other limited circumstances, such as responses to requests from law enforcement agencies, we may be required to disclose information you submit. Before you submit personally identifiable information, such as through a feedback object, you will be advised as to the purpose and how the information will be used.

Retention of Information

We destroy the information we collect when the purpose for which it was provided has been fulfilled unless we are required to keep it longer by legal or official policy. In some cases, information submitted to us may become an official record and therefore might be subject to a Freedom of Information Act request.
